Overhead light is the wrong light for a bedroom after ten. This glass bedside lamp answers with two flattened domes of hand-blown opal glass, stacked like a macaron, holding the bulb deep inside a double curve so the whole shade glows evenly and you never see a filament.

One bulb gives you three colour temperatures, cycled from the switch on the cord. At 18 cm across and 28 cm tall, it stands steady on a weighted polished chrome disc base.

Ħarsa ġenerali

Overhead light is the wrong light for a bedroom after ten o'clock. It comes from above, it strikes the ceiling flat and white, and it wakes you up on the way to bed when it should settle you. So most people read on a phone in the dark, which is worse for the same reason.

Gleam™ deals with that through its shape, not a setting. Two flattened domes of hand-blown opal glass are stacked like a macaron, with a pinched groove between them, and hold the bulb deep inside a double curve. The light has to pass through the wall of the glass, so at eye level you see the whole shade glowing evenly, with no filament and no hot point, even when you lie flat on the pillow next to it.

One bulb gives three colour temperatures: a low amber for winding down, a soft neutral for reading a chapter and a brighter setting for finding clothes at six in the morning. The switch on the cord cycles through them. There is no app to open, no remote to lose down the side of the bed and nothing to charge.

It really is small: 18 cm across the shade and 28 cm tall, on a slim stem of polished chrome that rises from a weighted disc base and keeps it steady when you reach past in the dark. That leaves space on a narrow nightstand for a book, a glass of water and a phone, which is usually the real limit, more than the light.

Kura

Switch it off and let the bulb cool for a few minutes before you handle the shade. Dust the glass with a dry microfibre cloth. For finger marks use a barely damp cloth and dry it at once, because opal glass shows water spots more than clear glass. Never hold the shade under a tap or spray cleaner at it; liquid reaching the lamp holder is the one thing that will ruin it. Polished chrome scratches easily, so wipe the stem and base along their length with a soft cloth and keep abrasive creams well away. Lift the lamp by the base and not the shade, and keep the USB cord back from the edge of the nightstand so that it cannot be pulled over in the dark.

Materjali

Shade: thick hand-blown opal glass in the form of two stacked, flattened domes with a pinched groove at the centre. The milk-white body diffuses the bulb and does not transmit it directly, and slight variation in wall thickness near the groove is a sign of hand-blowing, not a fault. Frame: stem in polished chrome-plated steel with a machined ring detail at the foot, on a weighted round disc base. Fitting: one E27 lamp holder with a tri-colour dimming LED bulb fitted, cycling three colour temperatures from the inline switch. Power: USB cord, about 1.5 m of pale flex with the switch inline, and no internal battery. Verified dimensions: shade 18 cm diameter, 28 cm overall height. Shipping weight 1.4 kg. Two colourways, Warm Cream and Chalk White, the same apart from the tint of the glass.

Light you do not look at

The bulb is never seen

The bulb sits deep inside a double wall of opal glass, so the light must pass through the shade to get out. What you see is the whole surface glowing evenly about 25 cm above the nightstand, with no filament, no hot spot and no wince when you switch it on at two in the morning.

Three lights from one lamp

Amber for winding down, soft neutral for reading and a brighter white for getting dressed. All three come from the one fitted bulb and cycle from the switch on the cord, so a single small lamp serves as night light, reading lamp and dressing lamp, with no remote, no app and nothing to charge.

Scaled to a nightstand

18 cm across and 28 cm tall, about the height of a wine bottle. It is small enough to leave a narrow nightstand room for a book, a glass and a phone, and the base is weighted enough that a hand reaching past it in the dark does not send it over the edge.

The first bedside lamp that doesn't dazzle me

I have been through three lamps looking for this. The glass is thick enough that you cannot see the bulb from any angle, including lying down with your head level with it. On the lowest amber setting my partner sleeps through while I read. It is smaller than I pictured from the photos — the shade is about the width of my hand spread out — but that turned out to be the point, because my nightstand is narrow.

Buy it for the warm setting, not the bright one

The three temperatures run amber, neutral, then a cooler daylight. Honestly I use the first two constantly and the third almost never — it works fine, it is just a bit clinical for a bedroom. Worth knowing the switch sits on the cord rather than on the lamp, so you feel for the cord and not the base. The chrome is properly plated rather than painted and the base has real weight to it.

Warm Cream is more buttery than the photos

Ordered the Warm Cream and it reads as a soft butter yellow in daylight and almost ivory once it is lit, which sits beautifully against oak. The glass has tiny thickness variations near the groove so the glow is not perfectly even, and I like that. One note: it runs from a USB cord, so make sure you have a free USB socket or a plug adaptor on your side of the bed.

Mistoqsijiet frekwenti

How bright is it in practice?
It is a lamp for atmosphere and reading, not for lighting a room. At 28 cm tall with a shade only 18 cm across, it puts a warm pool over a nightstand and up the wall behind it and does not light a whole bedroom. On the brightest setting you can comfortably read a paperback at arm's length, and on the lowest amber it serves as a night light you can leave on. To light a whole room you need a different lamp.
What are the three settings?
Three colour temperatures from the one fitted bulb: a low warm amber, a soft neutral white and a brighter cool white. The switch on the cord cycles through them, one step per press. Most people settle on amber in the evening and neutral for reading, and keep the brightest for getting dressed. There is no remote, no app and nothing to pair.
X'inhuma d-dimensjonijiet tiegħu?
The glass shade is 18 cm across and the lamp is 28 cm tall in all, about the height of a wine bottle with a shade roughly as wide as an open hand. It is small by design: sized for a bedside table, a hallway console or a shelf, and not for a large sideboard, where it would look lost. The shipping weight is 1.4 kg, most of it in the base.
Is a bulb included, and can it be replaced?
Yes. The tri-colour LED bulb comes fitted in a standard E27 screw holder, so you can buy a replacement anywhere when it eventually fails. An ordinary bulb will give light but not the three colour temperatures, because the colour switching is in the bulb and not in the switch. Use a warm 2700K LED as a replacement; it keeps the glass cool and stops the opal yellowing over the years.
What supplies its power?
By a USB cord, about 1.5 m of pale flex with the switch inline. It plugs into a USB wall socket, a mains adaptor or a power bank, with no bulky transformer to hide behind the nightstand. It is not cordless: there is no internal battery, so it has to stay plugged in. If your bedside socket is a two-pin mains outlet, you will need a small USB plug adaptor.
Which colourway is right for my room?
Chalk White is the quiet one, a milk-white opal that blends into cream plaster and gives the cleaner, brighter glow of the two. Warm Cream is a soft butter tone in daylight that turns nearly ivory when lit, and it is the one to choose for a room of oak, jute and terracotta. Both have the same shade, chrome stem and bulb, and differ only in the tint of the glass.
